Help needed - considering moving to Melbourne with a gifted boy

We are now staying in Shanghai and is considering moving to Melbourne on an opportunity that my company offer. My biggest concern is that I have a boy who is currently 6 yrs old. He is in International School in Shanghai and have been tested by his teachers to have grade 5 maths ability. He goes to higher grade class for maths lesson, and doing Maths Olympiad for Grade 2 level. He is now working on IXL program grade 4 ... basically not much problem other than new to some terms. Looking for helps on gifted programs in Melbourne Primary School, also read a lot on very long waiting list ... therefore, what is the application process. I won't want to risk his education. Thanks in advance ... if we were to move ... likely will be in Nov/Dec period, but want to be prepared before I discuss with my company.

Re: Help needed - considering moving to Melbourne with a gifted boy

In my investigation, I was most impressed by the philosophy of Eltham College and Melbourne City School. A school that has primary & secondary might be best able to accommodate.

Sydney schools are much better set up for gifted kids.... Sorry to say Victoria is way way behind.

Re: Help needed - considering moving to Melbourne with a gifted boy

You have posted my exact dilemma. We are moving and the waiting lists are a worry. We will be moving in a non intake year so the chances of getting a placement in the inner city schools are very limited. My daughter will be in Yr 1 and I am having trouble finding a primary school that can deal with subject acceleration.

I am very confused what school to choose. We may go with a local state school and it may be our only choice.

Good luck
