what to do??

Hi Everyone,

We have just had confirmation that our 4 year old is classified as gifted.

He has been tested recently, with the outcome of having an IQ of 132 in the 5 year old catergory, putting him in the top 2% for 5 year olds. (with him not actually 5 until another 3 months!)

At first of was so proud & exciting for him. Now - all I feel is nervous & scared about his future & the decisions that we are now faced with!

It has been discussed about Private vs Public Primary school for him next year & putting him straight into Grade 1. I'm not sure if emotionally he will be able to cope with this.....what to do??

I also feel isolated from my friends from playgroup & kinder too. I feel as though I can't discuss this issue with them because it might sound as though I am "boasting" about my son. I have been accused of using "flashcards" when my son was younger to allow him to read early etc - very frustrating!

Anyway - just thought I might introduce ourselves. It looks as though will we get some support here instead!

Thanks for listening.....

Renea

Re: what to do??

What ever you do dont discuss it with any school mums...it can be very isolating and cruel. They will not understand. Chat with the school cousellor. It is very hard I have not yet found who i can caht with.

Re: what to do??

I'm new to all this too. My son is in the top five percent for his age. I went straight to our principal with our report as it was the end of the year and they were working out classes for next year. For now she is putting him in a vertically grouped class, a yr 1 and 2, giving him the chance to socialise with kids his age while still being able to be intellecually challenged. I think we need to tred carefully when talking to other mums, if at all, about this. I agree, you don't want to sound like you are boasting. But at the same time I do want to find other parents who are like us and understand kids like ours. That's why I am looking at sites such as this one, I would like to meet some other parents and their kids in similar situations. Would like to chat more with you, our kids are only a year apart.

Re: what to do??

Hello,

I am writing to hopefully connect with other parents of gifted Children, and for support maybe some one can shed some light as to what we can do to help our daughter.
We have a daughter who's nearly 7 in Grade two. Who is Highly Gifted, a Visual Spatial learner with a central auditory processing learning problem. (has trouble differentiating between left and right) Our daughter has been tested, by a professional and they have said to us that our daughter's learning problem masks her Giftedness so any school will say that she is an average student, because of the way the schooling system completes their testing. Our daughters teacher believes her to be only average yet every other Teacher has said your daughter is an A grade student who does not apply herself and is not a risk Taker. Your daughter should top of the class but is only sitting at average level Why????? of course I didn't have any answers until I took her to a specialist this year. They has picked up on the learning difficulty. Unfortunately our daughters teacher is of no help with the learning problem, and does not believe that she is gifted. Yet both the Kindergarten teacher and Group leaders at ABC learning centres could see it (your learning in Kindergarten and Child care centres in mainly hands on and visual). The frustration for our daughter is that she gets bored easily and does not want to do the work because mentally she's at grade 3 level and beyond but cant express it in her writing/verbally or her Maths problems this way: 3+6+2=11
but can solve the problem vertically:
+3
6
2
=11
because our daughter does equations this way it gets marked as average or wrong. Yet anyone will agree there is more than one way to solve a Mathematical problem. I feel like i'm getting no where with the teacher and I can't talk about this with any one because no one would believe me anyway. Even her grand parents know she's a bright kid but they don't believe she is gifted because she is very immature for her age. I know my daughter is bored senseless at school but loves the social interaction. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Or any ideas of activities over school holidays, based in Brisbane.
Thanks

Re: what to do??

Have you considered homeschooling? I am a psychologist with two twice-exceptional kids (gifted with learning difficulties). Their learning issues also mask their giftedness (one is a gifted visual-spatial learner). They both initially went to school but I have homeschooled them for the past 5 years. They have blossomed (and can solve maths problems whichever way they like!!). You can view the Home Education website at: www.hea.edu.au.
Good luck!!

Re: what to do??

Hello Wendy,

Thank you so much for sharing and the Home Education Website. I'm so sorry I haven't replied back to you sooner. I have looked into home schooling and I had the School that my daughter goes to say to me that I can only home school my daughter if they are prepared to sign off on it. Which they are not because they believe they are providing an excellent education as you can imagine. however my daughter has had great results from tutoring. My husband's employment has since changed since I was last on here and we are moving to the Fraser Coast Hervey Bay Area. So I am hoping that the schools up their are a bit more receptive, and accommodating. Do you know of any one, or could recommend any one that does IQ Testing in Brisbane or the Fraser Coast Hervey Bay area??? Or perhaps if anyone else knows someone. Thank you kindly.

Re: what to do??

Hi Raewyn,
After I read your post, I contacted a friend who lives in Brisbane and who homeschools. She said that legally it is your decision about whether to homeschool your kids - your school has no say in it. You can double check this with the HEA. I don't know any psychologists in Brisbane, but I would encourage you to find a psychologist who specializes in assessing gifted kids, or at least one who specializes in educational assessments. Any psychologist is qualified to do IQ tests, however only psychologists who are trained to assess gifted kids would be aware of the specific issues that you are currently faced with. Good luck!! Re: what to do??

Hi Wendy,

Thank you very much for your reply. I will definitely look into a psychologist who specialises in gifted children when we move which is shortly. If we had of stayed in Brisbane i would have used the Mater Children's Child Development Network. Who also come highly recommended, by GP's and Teachers especially Dr Mike O'Keefe. As he has a team of people working with him and they not only do they help the child but work with the parents and the schools as well. From what I have heard schools will actually take notice of what this particular doctor says about a child because he works with the schooling system as well. Which is fantastic because I know of a few parents who have spent money to get their child assessed only to have the heart ache of the School not wanting to listen. Mike is so highly recommended that I have been put on a (2nd )waiting list, to wait to get onto the (1st waiting list). LOL ! :) I think if I had of stayed in Brisbane I may have been waiting up to 6-10months before I was informed of an appoint that may be available in 3 months time. But have been told it is well worth the wait. Who knows I may even get a phone call for an appointment after we have moved which would be great. Thank you for your advise Wendy, and for thinking of me when asking your friend about home schooling. I will let you know how I go. Raewyn

Re: what to do??

Sorry, just realised you're in Brisbane, or around there. Where are moving to though??

Definitely second the information re professionals who specialise in giftedness :). I have two highly gifted children, one of whom is 2E, and I know how much hard work it can be :).

Take care
