Term 2 2004
I’ve been running gifted youth groups at various locations in Melbourne for the past four years.
During this period my intention has always been to provide space and time for like-minded gifted students to meet and feel comfortable with themselves and each other. I provide:
- An environment that is stimulating and challenging but most of all fun.
- Access to a group of like-minded people which encourages friendships.
- Opportunities for the gifted person’s need to DO something about the issues of the world.
- Validation of the gifted person’s unique way of viewing the world.
- An environment where risks can be taken that would be shunned normally. We have completed the cancer society’s “Relay for Life”, taken part in the “Winter Sleep Out”, coloured up in the “Shave for a Cure”, taken part in rock climbing, performing, swimming, creating, eating, self-discovery, family and junior camps, problem solving and many other activities.
- A safe supportive environment where mistakes can be made and challenges can be accepted and dealt with, eg. the responsibility for organisational issues.
Gifted youth groups cater for the full range of giftedness, though as with everything not every person will find that the environment suits them. However I do encourage attendees to sign up for a term even if they are reluctant to actively participate in everything that happens.
