Opportunity Classes (OC) exams

My son will be sitting the oc exam tomorrow and I am very interested to see the percentage of students sitting this test has been receiving any tutoring prior. For my son he has not had any tutoring at all, maybe I'm a bit naive to let him sit the exam without any prior tutoring but I have always felt that I would like to give him the opportunity (no pun intended) to sit the exam and to see if he does have the natural ability to be accepted or at least pass. I do not want to rob him of the opportunity just because I may feel he is not quite up there with the tutored students. In my opinion his chances are less than 1% but I would still like him to give it a try. He has always been an above average student from Kindergarten without any help outside of school. It would be very interesting to see the results of this post. If you do not want to comment just post yes (for tutored) and no (for no prior tutoring). I sincerely hope I will get some posts to see the results. Thank you everyone in advance.

Re: Opportunity Classes (OC) exams

Hi Jazzue Do not worry if you child wasn't tutored. If you honestly believe your child has the ability then generally your son's school would have supported his application to sit the OC exam in the first place. The biggest stress about whether to sit the OC exam is not the exam itself but "what do I do if my child doesn't get an offer?". Remember, only a small percentage of students sitting the exam are offered a position. If your son doesn't gain one it doesn't mean he is not a bright child, it might just mean that this year there were too many kids for the number of places available. My daughter got into OC without being tutored and then sat the Selective High School Exam in November 09 for year 7 entry in 2011. She didn't finish 2 out of the 3 exam papers, didn't study for it and wasn't tutored and still received an offer at the no.3 school in the state. Nearly most of her OC friends were tutored yet she got a higher selective entrance mark than all but 1 of them (and yes that student was tutored). If your son has a natural ability then do not worry that he has not been tutored. Natural ability is better than an artificially inflated ability achieved through tutoring. If your son is not successful in getting into OC then ensure that he is in a school that will continue to stimulate his love of learning.
