Does anyone regret testing??

Hi,
My son is 5 and started Kindergarten this year. His teacher has recommended we get him tested for giftedness. This is presented to us as being entirely optional. We were also told that many people wait to test a child when they are a little older, yest my sons teacher says she sees something quite unique and so recommends testing. Does anyone regret getting child tested and heading down that path?
Regards, Helen

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Hi, I am also in the same boat. My son's teacher in kindy recommended testing for him, but I felt he just wasn't ready and so I put it off. Last week I was advised by his Year 1 teacher that it's time to get him tested. Does anyone have any regrets about getting their child tested? Has anyone had a test done and felt the results were innaccurate? These are just some of the things I would like to hear about!

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Thanks for your post, just so you know, I have decided to proceed with cognitive testing, we can then make a decision based on what comes up. Happy to let you know if I find any of it inaccurate. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for letting me know. It looks like I'll also be heading down the testing track too. I hope it all goes smoothly!

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

I was so glad I had my son tested in kindergarten, it really helped us deal with the behavioral problems, and for the teachers to know how he learned. He is now in Reception and is doing year 3 maths (one of his favourite subjects)
I am now considering having my daughter tested too. It was compulsory for our kindergarten, (but have since moved to one where they don't test) and I believe it should be for most kindergartens across the country

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

We had always suspected that our son may have been bright. He walked the day he turned 9 months could speak sentences at his 1st birthday party and taught himself the alphabet via Sesame Street when he was 20 months old. We always resisted suggestions to have him ttested but his teacher was quite insistant when he was 7. Thank goodness. Now we know where we stand he ranked in the top 1%. The school has been great and send him on to excelerated learning programs. It was the best thing we did. We'll be testing his brother next year when he is 7 and I dare say my other two will also be in the same situation. It has been a very positive experience for us.

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Hi all, We had the cognitive psychometric testing this morning. Our son also ranked in top 1% and was described as "highly gifted". The psychologist was so lovely and it was a fun experience for our son. It has opened our eyes that we shouldn't ignore these special needs, and need to work with the school to ensure he is challenged and nurture appropriately.
Glad we did it, even at 5 years of age.

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Hi, I'm glad you can finally have an answer to all the suspicions and signs. It must be a relief. We have our testing in a few weeks time, I hope it will also be worth it for us. My son will be 7 years old. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly and my son enjoys the process. Any advice on what I should be doing and saying to my son prior to testing?

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Hi, we told our son a few days before that he was goin to meet a friend of his teachers (as she made the referral) and that he would ask him to do some 'work'..my sons word for just about any activity, and also that he may want to work out what type of work he is interested or cleaver at, so we can make sure his school work in interesting for him.
Hope thats useful and best of luck. My son had so much fun, the psychologist was really lovely and they both laughed a lot. He wanted ot do more when he finished!
All the best.

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Hi, I'm new too! I have a 3 year old son and the carer in the childcare centre found something unique from him which we also found as early when he was 2 years old. He can identify many flags, spell his name, spell the numbers, count 1-100 and count it backwards and form clay with words, loves to sing, etc. The carer and the centre;s director are recommending us to take him for an assessment. By the way we're here in Northern suburbs of Melbourne and he loves Charlie and Lola. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Hi I am new too. We had our Son tested on his 4th birthday (he is now 5.5). We don't regret it for a minute (He is now in Prep) and the school has been great, mainly I think because we had the facts to back us up. In other words, I was not just another Mum thinking her child was gifted. He has just started his acceleration program, and is loving it. I hate to think what would have happened if we were still battling the school to get recognised, as his behaviour prior to starting the program was horrid. My only advice would be that you see a Psych that is specialised in the are of gifted children. Our son is a perfectionist and wary of doing anything that he wont automatically excel in, so there were parts of the test that he refused to do, or refused to do timed. The Psych was fantastic, as she knew that it was a fairly typical trait for gifted kids. We were also worried about leaving him with a stranger, as he was still a bit anxious being left alone, but were astounded that he was happy for us to leave!! The testing for us really just confirmed for us what we already knew about our Son. I must admit though, it was really nice to know for sure that he was gifted, it made some people (kinder, school) take us far more seriously!! Check out the Victorian Gifted and Talented web sight for Psych's that specialise in gifted kids. Good Luck!

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Hi I am new to all of this to... We are getting our 4 year old son tested in 2 weeks I had to jump up and down to get the psych to do the test though! I am hoping we have made the right decision as we have been told it is not going to change anything. Everybody is just focusing on his behaviour and not why he maybe behaving that way he does. He is a perfectionist and likes things done his way and likes "different" things as the kids the same age so he prefers to play alone. He maybe only 4 but he can read as well as his 7 year old cousin, he loves numbers, road signs and drives everyone crazy with his endless questions. The preschool recommended a peadiatrician to get him tested for Asperger's. We were told it was highly unlikely he had Asperger's but he was extremely intelligent. She suggested to get him to have iq test but it took 2 appoinments to convince our new psych that it was NOT Asperger's even after a report from the peadiatrician! So finally my son is booked in for his test and it is great to hear that all of you don't regret getting your child tested. The next thing for us to think about is if my 1 year old daughter is the same!!!

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

I am new and would love help, suggestions and advice for our 4yr daughter. She too is demonstrating many advanced traits such as mastering jigsaw puzzles (5-8yrs range), exc memory recall of things places, signs, letters, numbers, can read, has excellent spatial ability, advanced computer skills and displays complex reasoning to things. On the flip side she struggles socially and is not as linguistically advanced as others her age. She loves cuddles and affection and is a very sensitive little girl. The daycare have often referred to her being in her own world and problematic as she won't sit on the mat and prefers to seek out activities that interest her rather than conform to group activities. She plays with the other children however seeks out playing with older children and is very interested in the mechanics of things. They do acknowledge that she is very bright. One carer who is German one day taught her to count to 5 in German (age 3.5 yrs). A week later without any further teaching my daughter went to the carer and recited them back to her in perfect German! within the week she was counting to 15 in German and reciting parts of furniture etc. Finally we took her to a Pediatrician and she ruled out Aspergers and encouraged us to get her tested for Giftedness as she may fall into the 97th Percentile. She explained to us our child is bright and she is bored with what they are teaching at Daycare! not a problem as is being eluded to by the Daycare staff. I need help as to how to now get this done? I am very concerned about Prep next year due to her lacking in Social/Emotional skills (this is improving however) and I guess just being herself which is considered different to the children in the 50th percentile which are considered normal.

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

I Had my son tested when he was 5, but he didn't like the psychologist so didn't cooperate very well. Even the test proved he is gifted but the scores had big discrepancy. No matter what, the test did help us understand why he is so different from others. However after 4 years later we brought him to another IQ test because we don't think school cater him at all. This time the results of subtests are quite even and the total IQ score are much higher. Therefore my suggestion is that if you want to put your kids for the IQ test at age 4 or 5, try to have your child retest couple years later, you might see the differences. If you are in the public system, have school do the retest for you child and I think they might care more.

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

Thanks for your reply... we are taking our 4yr old to a Pediatric OT this Saturday for an initial assessment. I guess we will know what to do after that however I am keen to get her IQ tested. I am concerned that my daughter may not co-operate or have a bad day on the testing so it may come out flawed. I guess whatever assessment or test we get done will start to give us some insight into why our beautiful little girl can quite often be misunderstood by both adults and children. I will definitely look at follow up testing when she is older. Thankfully the school (public) we are sending her to for Prep has a teacher who specialises in gifted learning - we were opting to go private as we thought it may cater better. we are very lucky the school has a commitment to bright and gifted students - it definitely lowers my anxiety about school next year however I know its all still ahead of us. thanks again.

Re: Does anyone regret testing??

As I am also very new to this - can someone please advise how young is too young to be tested? Would like to have our son tested before going to prep so I can have the "backup" I think I will need when approaching the schools but have been advised that testing is not recommended or "accurate" until about 7! What would be the earliest anyone would recommend and then could you point me in the right direction as to who may test at an early age in Queensland?
