Hello...I am new too

Hi all,

my name is Jasmina and I am a mum of a little boy (5 y.o.) called Cameron. Cameron was officially identified as gifted early this year but I kind of knew it for a long time.

He spoke early...by 22 months he could put together five word sentences that people around him understood, I could always talk him out of tantrums (not that there were many of those), he knew all colours, variety of shapes, letters of alphabet, counting, etc. by the time he was 3.

However, what I found the most interesting are his questions and an ability to hold a very grown up conversation. Recently we had a talk about the federal elections where I was quizzed abou the policies of all major parties in a number of areas of interest to Cameron - environment, human and animal welfare and immigration detention. He then proceeded to ask me the same questions about the US system and the Chinese system....

We also discussed comparative religion and spirituality from the time he was two and a half (he says he is Wiccan these days), human reproduction when he was 4, nuclear energy and environment since he was 4, racism, reasons for wars, geography and history...you name it...I am grateful for google search!

Can is also a keen ballet dancer and he attends McDonald college where his music and dance ability were quickly nurtured - I am really happy with the school. He is best friends with all the girls who like him because as one girl puts it "he can play girl and boy games". He talks to anyone and makes friends easily...he also seems to understand a lot about the workings of human mind - recently he rigged a pop-psychology personality test so he can get the result he wants. Very sensitive and empathic and totally aganist violence. I guess Cam is gifted but what I really ove about him is that he is a happy kid and a really good person. LIke many of you said - until Cam started school I did not quite realise how different he was...I thought that other kids in this day and age ask similar questions but I was told they don't. Anyway...maybe this is enough of an intro...

A bit about us - I came to Oz as a refugee from Bosnia in 1993. I am a social worker and work with survivors of torture and trauma. My husband, Craig, is an engineer and a Martial Arts Master. I imagine we are both quite intelligent and possibly with some aspects of giftedness. Both our families are overseas and we have a constant struggle with time and everything that needs to be done. Though...such is the life of modern families.

I guess this is enough of an intro...I will be writing more and can't wait to hear more stories about other kids. This certainly makes me feel less alone and Cam does not appear so different. It's great!
Cheers
Jasmina

Re: Hello...I am new too

Hi Jasmina when i read your post i thought wow. You have almost decribed my son now 8years old. He had the early advanced Vocabulary, interest in religion, life and death (this is from a family who has never attended church ever or spoken about religon) Loves theatre, stage etc. Can sit and talk to anyone about anything from all ages. Extreme interest in anything Egyptian. Can play with boys and girls equally although he does sometimes find it hard to play with boys his age he is more into role play type games than rough and tumble. We are however not prepared to have him tested to find out if he is gifted. I am certain he is, as it all points that way. Unfortunately we have had some trouble with anxiety and behaviour relating to his anxiety. We are not in a position to have him in a Private School but we are lucky to have him in a very small School that is able to combine children from across the classes Prep - 6 into smaller groups that are at the same stage in there learning ability for daily sessions of Literacy and Maths. This approach seams to be working very well not only for my child but for others as well. Great to read your post and Good luck
