Hi, new here with 10y.o boy ?Gifted or not
Hi, I'm totally new to the subject of gifted children. My sons teacher has suggested he be tested for higher intelligence as he has always been very active (never naughty @ school) but very curious, and constantly fiddling with objects in the class room. He says he is bored, and has been doing work from the year above his level since grade 1. He retains information he reads and hears but is very selective (only if interested in the topic). He does not sleep well at night, and usually gets up and reads or watches TV. He has always acheived milestones very early for his age since he was an infant. Any advice or comments would be really appreciated. Also, does anyone know about the relevance of the APGAR score?

Re: Hi, new here with 10y.o boy ?Gifted or not
Hi Kazz, take the teachers advice and get him tested. Unfortunately the school systems can not cater for students that are significantly above the average. It is a crime in my view to waste the potential of a child that can overachieve. If he comes out well in the assessment, which his behaviour suggests to me he will, you can look for ways outside of the school to feed his need for extra learning. Look for organisations in your state that can help you. In Victoria we have CHIP (www.chip.edu.au) which is very good and has helped our now 12 year old excel.

Re: Hi, new here with 10y.o boy ?Gifted or not
Hi Phil, Thanks for your reply. We are still waiting for my son to be assessed, but his behaviour has improved a little since sitting down with his teacher and school councellor. They have started to give him more challenging work to do once his class work is completed and this is proving to be working. I am also in the throws of joining him in the Double Helix Science club through the CSIRO as science is his first passion, (he has wanted to study molecular science since a young age). I wasn't really sure what that was! Anyway for the time being we are just waiting and trying anything we can think of to keep him entertained so that he doesn't drive us all insane. At his parent teacher interview we spoke to the counsellor and she said that she could see something in him that sets him apart from some of the other students. My daughters teacher also said that she was very bright and above the other students with reading and is very mature and perceptual. She has started Prep this year. She is the leader in her group and is very much and organiser (even at home). She has always had very mature outlooks on things even as a toddler and seems to understand adult concepts. ? Does this show us anything?

Good. It sounds like things are on the improve. Best thing is probably to encourage any of the things that they enjoy. If your son really loves the science, then anything you can do for him in that area would make big diffierence. Your daughter is showing some signs that she is an over achiever, but there is not really enough to go on yet. Does she have any favourite things she likes to learn about? At that age I think it is best to expose them to as much as possible. Once she finds the thing she likes the most, she will let you know. Then encourage her in it.

Understanding 11 year old boy
Just popping back in to ask if anyone has any ideas on what the scores mean on the cognitive testing. My son had cognitive testing done about a week ago, but what score indicates gifted or just higher acheiver. His preliminary results indicated some general anxiety problems also which we will be addressing at a meeting tomorrow with his psychiatrists. Any insight as to what I can expect would be greatly appreciated.
